Jonathan David scored the winner as Lille secured their place in Europe with a 2-1 win over Rennes on Sunday. The Haitian striker struck in the 85th minute to secure a vital victory for his team and ensure that they will be playing in the Champions League next season. David was a constant threat throughout the game and caused problems for the Rennes defence, creating numerous chances for his teammates. His goal came just moments after Lille had been awarded a penalty following a controversial decision by the referee. Despite this, Rennes were able to equalize through a well-taken goal from Moussa Sissoko in the 64th minute. However, Lille refused to give up and fought back to take the lead once again thanks to a stunning strike from David. With only three minutes remaining, he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and calmly slotted home the winning goal to seal their qualification for the upcoming season. Lille now face a tough task in securing a top-four finish to qualify for the Europa Conference League next season, but they have shown great character and determination under new manager Christophe Galtier. |
